Small but of outstanding natural beauty, Cabanas Velhas beach is located in a discrete bay on the south-facing coast of the Municipality of Vila do Bispo. The name Cabanas Velhas, meaning Old Huts, is most probably a reference to the old seasonal housing for fishermen of the tuna fishery that operated here in summer. On the far left is a rocky jetty, carved out at the base of the cliff. This jetty was used to load barges with limestone blocks for the piers and sea-breaks at the ports of Lagos and Portimão. Sheltered from the prevailing winds and tempered by its Mediterranean influence, this beach offers calm waters for much of the year. It is part of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina.
