Further up, to the left of Baleeira Beach, set into a landscape of Mediterranean characteristics, is the much larger Martinhal Beach. This extension of sand is dominated by the Martinhal Islets, rising like castles in the bay of Martinhal-Baleeira. The long sandy Martinhal beach is protected from the north winds by a long line of sand dunes, interrupted by a marsh that develops in the interior, at the mouth of the fluvial-Karst valley further inland. This was an important site for human occupation during the Roman Period, dedicated, above all, to the production of clay amphorae. Looking to the right of the beach you can see Baleeira harbour, with its daily bustle of fishing boats.
